Had to post this....only a few people will remember this statue. I took this picture in St. Mary's Church. it is St. Lucy...what makes it special is, look on the tray she is holding and you will see a pair of eye balls.....She is the patron saint of eyes. I wonder what the patron saint of pregnancy would be holding ? Tuesday, November 27, 2007

That is an unusual statue to have in a church. Does St Mary's have a lot of the Patron Saints represented, or do they just have Lucy ? Just curious.
As a child we are taught if you do one particular thing too much, you will go blind. Seems like a prayer to St Lucy would fix all that up. ;-)
Good to know
sorry Ron, could not read your comment, my eyes you know....lol
Very timely - her feast is Dec. 13. Legend has it that her eyes were put out because she refused to deny her Christian faith. Before that, her punishment was to be forced into prostitution, but she became so stiff and heavy the guards weren't able to carry her away. Brian may have had a spiritual experience a few times when I was gifted with the same condition.
All the boys were hoping for a statue of St. Agatha who had her breasts cut off for refusing sex with a gov't official. But since they were crushed first, they would not have looked so enticing on a plate.
Regarding the patron of pregnancy: for a happy pregnancy, a plate of almonds, the sign of fertility; for an unwanted one, a plate of condoms (but they kept disappearing).
Wouldn't a fitting nickname for St. Agatha, be St. Perdue ?
Now I know why Candy Coated Almonds are given out as wedding favors. Its a sign of fertility, very interesting.
Nana always said Uncle Brian was a Saint. You have confirmed his spirituality ;-) haha
Love ya
Ron
lol ... what a bunch of nuts. :o)
(kidding)
what I wondered was "whose eyeballs are they?" And isn't that creepy?
My Dad told the boys (my 6 brothers) that they would grow hair on their palms from the same thing that you were told would make you go blind.
Tink
You are a welcome addition to our little world of insanity.. and I am so ever grateful you are here leaving comments.. keep them coming.
Once I year I invite my entire family over for dinner, and I serve "Soup to NUTS"

I'm sorry for the following in advance, Don Don {sic - ;^) }, but I too am a 'slave' of sorts to my Ethnic / Religious Heritage.
As such, my knee-jerk reaction to:
>>"St. Lucy... look on the tray she is holding and you will see a pair of eye balls.....She is the patron saint of eyes. I wonder what the patron saint of pregnancy would be holding?"<<
is: A copy of "Roe-VS-Wade." And yes, the statue would be crying Tears of Blood...........
{Please forgive me, Don Don - the Holidays are always melancholy for me to begin with, and perhaps my knee-jerk isn't appropriate - feel free to delete it with my blessing.}
MT...I do not know who you, but I would never delete your comments. Anytime you feel like talking please do so. Hope you are feeling a little less blue...as you can see, I created this Blog to make people smile not sad, so join us and be happy.
A bit late with this, but many MANY thanks, Don Don. ;^)
This year has been pretty wild for me, yes, but God's Plan has been dumping so much in my lap recently that for the first time in three years, I'm actually ENJOYING the Holidays.
You had a hand in this, as did your Fine and Most Stout Son Ron - I make it a point of pride NOT to exclude all that have been there for me when I might need help, once things turn around.
I'm already a Regular {if a bit sporadic in the contribution department} here Don Don, and I cherish the fact like you'll never know.
Merriest of Christmases, and Blessed of New Years', if I don't "see" you befor the calender loses the last leaf.........
{You too, Ron - just in case I get "booted" from Rachel's place again. :^( }
I'll always be here in some way, whether I contribute or not; count on it, My Friends!!!
8^)
Chris
